Who can participate in the Musika contest?

Musika is open to singers and musicians residing in Quebec who are between the ages of 18 and 25 on October 1st, 2018. The contest is only open to soloists and not groups.

Those wanting to participate must not have a contractual relationship with a recognized record company or agent or have been a winner at the Festival International de la chanson de Granby or Ma première Place des Arts or have previously been a winner of the L’Étoile montante contest. Also excluded are employees of the Group CH, including evenko employees, L’Équipe Spectra and evenko foundation.

How do I enter the contest?

You must register on the Musika Website. When registering, you must submit a video of a song with which you wish to win the grand prize. In the video, you must be the sole performer.

Follow the instructions on the Website to access the registration form. Fill out the form, insert a video of your song of up to 90 seconds long at the place indicated and click on the “Submit” button. A confirmation email will then be sent to you in which you will be instructed to pay the $25 fee. Once the fees are paid, a short delay is required before your video is processed and displayed online.

What are the specific rules for the video?

The videos submitted must contain only the performances of singer-songwriters-composers, singer songwriters, singer composers or singers. Videos must have a maximum length of 90 seconds. No lip syncing will be accepted. There are no restrictions on choice of language of the song in the videos submitted to the competition, as long as the language is used within the song. The content of the videos must be in accordance with clause 40 of the contest rules, available at the bottom of this page. Any video containing hateful or obscene comments or gestures will be removed. There will be no refund of the registration fee in any case.

How many times can I enter the contest?

You may enter only once per contest edition.

How can I maximize my chances of winning?

You can maximize your chances of winning by putting on your best possible performance with clear image and sound quality. Once the voting period is open to the general public, it is suggested to share your submission on social media with family members, friends and acquaintances. The 10 videos that collect the most votes will be invited to perform at the finale before the panel of judges. The finalists will then have to offer their best live performance.

Can I be accompanied by anyone in the video?

No. The participant must be the only performer of the song in their video. It is important that you are the performer of your song.

What is the selection process for finalists?

From December 1st, 2018 to January 7th, 2019, there will be a voting period where all videos on the Website will be submitted to a public vote, whether through social media or directly on the Website. On January 8th, 2019, the 10 videos receiving the most votes will be announced on the Website. Participants linked to these videos will be invited to a finale to perform before a panel of judges.

What do I win by being selected for the finale?

By being selected for the finale, you will have the opportunity to unveil your talents on stage at L’Astral in front of an audience. You will also have the opportunity to be evaluated by music professionals from, among others, evenko and L’Équipe Spectra. To support your visibility, your videos will be the only ones posted on the contest site once the voting period is over. You will also be interviewed and your performance in the finale will be broadcast in whole or in part on social media. Finally, all finalists will receive a two-year LANDR PRO subscription. No cash prize will be offered to the finalists.

What is the grand prize?

The winner of the Musika contest will perform live on stage at one of the evenko or Spectra festivals such as Osheaga, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, FrancoFolies, Montréal en Lumière or Heavy Montreal in 2019.

In addition to performing on stage, the contest winner will benefit from musical support structure and a professional studio to record a promotional album of three songs.

How will you choose the grand prize winner?

The following criteria will be taken into account by the jury during the evaluation:

  • Originality and authenticity;

  • Quality of the interpretation of the text and music;

  • Vocal quality: Accuracy, timbre, shades, and vocal singularity;

  • Charisma and ease on stage;

  • Professional Maturity: Has the skills and qualities necessary for a musical career.

Who will be on the panel of judges?

The panel will be comprised of musical artists, as well as members of evenko and L’Équipe Spectra.

Can someone accompany for the auditions?

Other than your family and friends who can purchase tickets to attend the finale on February 15, 2019, at L’Astral, you cannot be accompanied on stage for your performance other than by the musical ensemble provided by the evenko foundation.

Why is there a registration fee?

The costs generated by this competition are high for the evenko foundation. In addition, the grand prize presents an exceptional opportunity for emerging talent. Therefore, it was decided that those who sign up should do so seriously and with integrity—all the while keeping the cost to a minimum as to not prevent any serious applicants.

Are the registration fees refundable?

The moment you have entered the contest, submitted your video and paid your fees, they are not refundable. All contestants must respect the contest rules. In case of non-compliance, participation will be refused and the video withdrawn. There will be no refund of the registration fee.

Will I have to sign an agency contract?

No.

Why is the age of participants limited?

The evenko Foundation mission is to support youths aged 5 to 25 in the performing arts. In the performance of its mandate, it is therefore limited to this age group. However, the grand prize of the Musika contest, by its nature, can only be utilized by a person of age. Unfortunately, youths aged 5 to 17 are excluded from the competition.

Am I eligible to receive royalties on my video service and/or my performance at the finals?

By participating in the Musika contest, you give up all possible rights of your performance on video or in the finale.

How many times can I vote for a video?

You can vote once a day per video submitted to the Musika contest.

Can I vote for my own video?

Of course.

Do you have to pay to vote?

All votes are free. However, you will need to provide your e-mail address in order to vote.

When and where will the finale be held?

The finale of the Musika contest will take place on February 15, 2019 at L’Astral in Montreal. For finalists who reside more than 200km from Montreal, the evenko foundation will offer reasonable compensation for travel and accommodation, if applicable.

Are all genres of music accepted for the contest?
